The Backyard Herbalist
I believe that knowing and using local plants that grow around us is as important to our wellness as locally grown foods.
For both my family’s wellness and my community’s wellness, I wildcraft and organically grow many herbs and plants that can be used as teas, salves, oils, balms, steam inhalations, syrups, honeys … you get the idea: Herbal remedies.
I am outside year-round, in the forests and fields, learning from and listening to the plants. Working with them in my kitchen. Re-establishing our herbal tradition that has been lost for hundreds of years.
In addition to being close to the earth in my herbal practice, I support other herbalists, herbal growers and wildcrafters in our craft and frequently order herbs to round out my apothecary directly from them— especially if I am using herbs that simply don’t grow in my bioregion. It feels good to be connected this way even when I have to go non-local.**
Looking for a particular plant for your herbal apothecary? Want to get on the waiting list for the next CSA cycle? Interested in a personal formulation? My herbal preparations are available only via my CSA or special order — Email me to see what I have on hand in my own apothecary and see what we can craft together.
**I do my best to ensure a local & organic *dirt-to-herbalist* connection in all my work. If I don’t have it, I check around with other local herbalists and wildcrafters, And if it is an herb that is nonlocal, I try to choose small wildcrafters then, too.
And because sometimes there are just limitations in the supply chain - I occasionally buy bulk herbs and medicine making materials from Mountain Rose Herbs — as I can rely on their overall commitment to having a herbs that have been grown organically and in a sustainable manner.
